History
Volunteers of Banyule was first incorporated in February 1999. At this time it moved from an idea developed around a kitchen table to being an organisation with legal and community rights and responsibilities.
The idea around the kitchen table was developed by two of our founding members, Sr. Margaret Ryan RSM AO and Mr. Charles Lewis who were both committed to social justice at a local level.
Margaret was aware of many people who upon leaving work, often involuntarily, were distressed at not having enough to fill in their day. On the other hand there were many non-profit organisations that need volunteers to deliver their services.
Margaret identified that a Volunteer Resource Centre in Banyule would be able to assist many people use their skills to help others. Margaret contacted the Banyule City Council who agreed to support the new organisation with funding of $5,000 to help with running costs. Charles identified that our current offices were owned by Council and vacant and made a request to use them.
So with an empty office and $5,000 Margaret and Charles gathered friends and supporters and furnished the office with donated goods. These volunteers went to other similar organisations and asked to share their processes and procedures. They were never disappointed, everyone said yes.
Today we have a budget of over $100,000 and employ 3 paid part time workers but the main work is still done by volunteers. We continue to meet the needs of our local community and are always positive when asked to share our processes and procedures.
